The Pottery Mechanics Institute (PMI) was founded in 1825 with Josiah Wedgwood presiding at the inaugural meeting.
For many years the PMI existed as part of the Institute of Ceramics. After incorporation within the Institute of Materials, the assets were used to establish the PMI Trust Fund in 1992. The Fund is a registered charity (no. 1014961) regulated by the Charity Commission with the objective of “the advancement of education in the field of ceramics by the promotion and encouragement of training and research.”
The PMI Trust Fund supports all UK ceramic industry sectors including heavy clay, porcelain, refractories, sanitaryware, tableware and technical ceramics as well as researchers and postgraduate students in ceramic and related subjects at UK universities.

PMI provided part- funding to allow 6 staff members of Ceres Power to attend a training course delivered by the Welsh Coating and Printing Centre at Swansea University in September 2023
"We are tremendously grateful for the support of the PMI during the pandemic. The Trust's generous funding helped us to provide many bathroom sector employees with online learning, making lockdown a productive time that will assist them in their onward careers in the industry. Our sector is built on its people, and this initiative has helped make that foundation much stronger."
